Antarctic adventures, luxury expeditions and Kraken Adventures in the savvy news...

Hey savvy friends,

Who out there likes to sail in the cold?

Before you say, “Hannah what are you on about, uh, no one ever,” I thought I’d start today by introducing you to the extraordinary Lisa Blair.

Meet the first woman in history to sail solo around Antarctica.

Lisa Blair - First Female Solo Navigation of Antartctica

A journey that saw her battling waves the size of houses, freezing conditions, snow and hail storms, extreme isolation and fatigue.

After 72 days at sea Lisa’s mast came crashing down in the middle of the night. From then on Lisa’s sole purpose was the survival of herself and her yacht.

After treating herself for hyperthermia and limping her way north to Cape Town under an active Pan Pan, Lisa was receiving fuel from a container ship which then resulted in an accidental collision between the 80,000-tonne vessel and Lisa's little 11-tonne yacht.

This December Lisa plans to take on Antarctica 2.0 - sailing non-stop and unassisted around Antarctica to claim the overall speed record.

How to manage cold water shock

Managing Cold water shock

Many of our members are starting to head into the chillier autumn months. If like me you don’t like jack frost to stop you from spending time on the water then it’s best to make sure you know what to do if you end up going into freezing waters.

The effect on the body of entering water 15°C and below is often underestimated. This shock can be the precursor to drowning.

Our friends over at the RNLI have a useful article on what to do if you enter the water unexpectedly. We hope you will never need to use this advice, but just incase it’s worth a read.

Ship stores own CO2 emissions while sailing

Ship collects its own CO2 Emissions

As the shipping industry comes under increasing pressure to reduce emissions one company is making big leaps in innovation to help companies achieve their goals.

Rotterdam-based Value Maritime claims to be the first in the world to be able to capture and store CO2 while at sea. In early October, the ship Nordica will be the first to use this new sustainable technology. The capability to capture and store up to 100 % CO2 is modelled on an existing filter system for sulphur oxides and particulate matter.
